The Chinese scholar’s desk had a whole category of objects whose only purpose was to be handled while thinking.
Wenwan — things to be played with. Brush rests, small carvings, weights. Their function was tactile: something for the hand to do during the pauses in reading or writing. They were chosen for how they felt as much as how they looked.
This is proportioned to be picked up rather than only viewed. The surfaces are worked so there is something to find with the thumb.
Within reach on the desk, not on a shelf behind you. An object like this that never gets handled is missing its function.
Handling is expected and will alter the surface over time — that is the intended outcome, not damage. Dust with a soft brush. Keep out of direct sunlight.
