A tea pet has no function. That is what makes it worth explaining.
In gongfu tea practice, the first rinse of the leaves is discarded — and rather than tip it away, people pour it over a small figure kept on the tray. Over months and years the figure absorbs the tea, darkens, and develops a soft sheen. It becomes a record of how often you have sat down to drink.
A compact figure sized for a small tray, unglazed on the surfaces that matter so it can take on colour. It arrives pale. That is the starting point, not the finished state.
Pour warm tea over it each time you brew, then brush it with a soft tea brush. Do not use soap — ever. Let it dry between sessions. The change is slow and worth waiting for.
Tea only. No detergent, no dishwasher. If it goes unused for a long time, rinse with hot water before starting again.
